LIGHT:  Typical:  USS Belleau Wood (Independence class) was 620 feet long.  Top speed: 31 knots.  Designed to carry 1,570 men and 35 aircraft.

ESCORT:  Typical:  USS Gambier Bay (Casablanca class) was  512 feet long.  Top speed: 19 knots.  Designed to hold 860 men and 28 aircraft.

BATTLESHIPS:  USS New Jersey (Iowa class) was 887 feet long.  Top speed: 33 knots. Designed to hold 1,900 men and 3 catapult planes. (16″ and 5″ guns plus anti-aircraft 40mm and 20 mm)

CRUISERS:

HEAVY:  Typical:  USS Baltimore (Baltimore class) was 673 feet long. Top speed: 33 knots.  Designed to hold 1,142 men and 4 catapult planes. (8″ and 5″ guns plus anti-aircraft 40mm and 20 mm)

LIGHT: Typical: USS Astoria (Cleveland class) was 610 feet long.  Top speed: 32.5 knots.  Designed to hold 1,255 men and 4 catapult planes.  (6″ and 5″ guns plus anti-aircraft 40mm and 20 mm)

AA (antiaircraft): Typical:  USS Oakland (Oakland class) was 541 feet long.  Top speed: 32.5 knots.  Designed to hold 800 men.  (5″ guns, 40mm, 20mm plus torpedo tubes and depth charge tracks)

DESTROYERS:  AKA “tin cans”  There were many “vintage” destroyers still active in WWII.  Typical “new” destroyer:  USS Erben (Fletcher class) was 376 feet long. Top speed: 35 knots. Designed to hold 329 men.  (5″ guns, 40mm, 20mm plus torpedo tubes and depth charge tracks and projectors)
